Since you will not have to call that locksmith you will not be stuck with a payment to them. In addition, after a locksmith picks a lock there are times when it is no longer even functional. That said, you will have to buy a new lock if you want to keep everything safe and secure. At the end of the day it is worth taking the time to learn the skills involved with picking a lock. They could really help to save you some aggravation in the long run.
The first step to learning how to pick a lock is determining the type of lock that you are working with. Locks that are on house doors and car doors are usually more difficult to pick than a combination lock or a padlock. The reason is that the car and house locks are generally built a little bit better. However, they still can be picked but it might just take a few minutes longer. All of these locks are what are known as pin and tumbler locks. This means that they have rotating cylinders in them that are held in place by a few pins. In order to pick a pin and tumbler lock you are going to need a few lock picking tools. The required tools are a tension wrench and a pick. Without these tools you will have a tough time picking any type of lock that utilizes the pin and the tumbler system.
You will want to take the wrench and put it into the very bottom part of the keyhole. When you put it in the keyhole you will be watching for which way the cylinder is supposed to rotate. This will tell you how the lock is meant to open. If you gently turn the cylinder to one side and it is hard to turn this means that you are rotating it the wrong way and that the lock is meant to open in the other direction. When you gently turn the wrench in the proper direction it will slowly turn without too much resistance. After you have determined the correct direction, you want to turn the wrench in that direction and hold.
Take the pick and insert it in the upper part of the keyhole area. This part of the keyhole is located just above where the wrench is inserted. Being very careful, use the pick to feel around for anything that could resemble one of the pins. If you think that you have located where the pins are you will use the pick to push them one by one. This will slowly begin to unlock the lock. When you push a pin you will know if you have unlocked it because you will hear a distinct clicking noise. This noise will be heard each time a pin is pushed over in the correct direction. In short, the pins that click have released the cylinder. Once the cylinder is completely released the lock will open up. Take your time and make sure to push each pin over. In some locks there will be more pins than in others. You may have to push over several pens in a house lock but just a few in a padlock. There is no difference in the technique used to push over the pins. The only difference is how long it takes. Once you have pushed all of the pins over the lock will unlock and you will have successfully picked it.
Learning how to pick a lock is a useful skill that most everyone should know about. The good news is that it is fairly easy to learn and the skills needed are not hard to master. If you take the time to understand the steps involved you should be able to figure out how to pick a lock in no time. It is important, however, to understand that you need the right tools to get the job done properly. If you have a tension wrench and a pick you will have a much easier time picking the lock then if you do not have these tools.
