How to Knit
Learning how to knit is a hobby that has seen some growth over the last several years. For many people, the process of knitting is very relaxing. In the fast paced world that we live in knitting has proved to be one of the best ways to relax and take your mind off of life’s everyday pressures. The thing about knitting, however, is that it is a difficult skill to master. Being able to knit effectively can take years and years of practice. Just like anything else, learning the basics and fundamentals will allow you to have a good foundation that you can grow your skills on.
The first step in learning how to knit involves making the slip know. You will want to make a loop with the end of the yarn. The long end of the yarn should go over the short end of the yarn. The long end is the end that is attached to the ball of yarn. Put the long end of the yarn through the loop that has now formed and pull on it gently. Pulling too hard is not advised as the knot will get too tight. After pulling gently you can put the knitting needle through the newly formed loop. Now it is time to pull the knot tight around the needle.
Next, you will want to make an additional loop with the yarn that is connected to the large ball. Make sure that the end that comes from the needle is behind the end that comes from the yarn ball. You have now created a loop that you need to slip into the needle. Once you slip the loop in the needle pull on the long end of the yarn to tighten things up. Do this four or five times because each time you repeat this you are actually making a stitch.
Now you are ready to knit a stitch. This is one of the basic fundamentals that are involved with learning how to knit. It should be noted, however, that there are a few different kinds of stitches that can be made. They all have their own uses. The easiest stitch to make is when you take another needle and insert it in the loop that is closest to the point of the original needle. Make sure that the needles are forming an X and that the yarn is behind the X and not in front of it. Bring the yarn to the place where the needles meet and lay it on top of the X. Now wrap the yarn around the needle that was just inserted and make sure that it is somewhat snug. You will want to start pulling the inserted needle out of the loop very slowly while making sure that the yarn that you just wrapped does not fall off of the needle. When you see that the needle is about to be pulled completely out of the loop turn the needle so that the point is facing you. Make sure that the yarn that is wrapped around it is still in place. This process is what is making the stitch. The loop that you just pulled onto the second needle will serve as a new stitch. Now that there is a new stitch in place you can pull off the old stitch that you were originally working with by pulling on it gently. This process can be repeated over and over again in an effort to create as many stitches as you need. Depending on the pattern that you are knitting you may literally need thousands of these stitches before your project is totally completed.
As you can see, the process of learning how to knit can be somewhat complicated. The best thing that you can do is practice these basic fundamentals until you have them mastered. These fundamentals will be the things that will allow you to knit exactly what you want every time you set out to begin a new project. The one thing to keep in mind when learning how to knit is that it really does take a lot of time. The skills involved in the entire process can be practiced over the course of a lifetime and never mastered. Just like all other skills, you will never be as good as you can be if you give up on it too soon.
If you do learn how to knit there are dozens of practical applications that you have available to you. Outside of the fact that you can knit clothes or a quilt, is the fact that you can knit for money. Since it is such a tough skill to master there are people out there that will pay accomplished knitters to create something for them since they cannot do it on their own. However, the best practice once you become good at knitting is to use it as a way to rest and relax.
