How to Draw
Learning how to draw is something that thousands, if not millions, of people aspire to do on a daily basis. After all, the art of drawing is something that is considered a specialized, and somewhat valuable, skill. Drawing is considered valuable for a couple of reasons. First off, it is used as a way to relax by many people. In short, drawing seems to be therapeutic to people that are good at it. There is nothing like taking a few hours to yourself and drawing a picture or two to get your mind off of the pressures of everyday life. In addition to stress relief, if you are good at drawing you can use the skill to gain employment. Regardless of whether you are looking for a full-time job or just some freelance work, learning how to draw will be something that will help you make a few extra dollars. People are always looking for artists that can design and draw things for them. For example, a company may need to outsource some freelance drawing work for their company logo. Believe it or not, most company logos are designed by an artist that know how to draw before they are finished and finalized using computer software. That said, there are a few steps that need to be followed in order to learn how to draw.
First off, you are going to need to start with the basic sketch. This is an important first step because it will get your mind thinking about how the drawing is going to look as a whole. If, for example, you are learning how to draw a person you will want to outline the entire body. Make sure to include a rough outline of the head, arms, torso and legs. Once you have made your basic sketch it is important to sit back and evaluate it for a few moments. Take special note of how the proportion of the sketch is. Make sure that the head is the right size when compared to the body and that the arms and legs are each the same exact length. If you find that you have made the basic sketch un-proportional you can simply start over and try again until you get it right. It is important to get this step right as it serves as the foundation for your drawing. Everything that you do from this point on will not look correct if you do not get the basic sketch how you want it.
After getting the basic sketch down you will need to begin adding basic volumes. What this means is that you will start to shape the different aspects of your drawing. Once again, if you are drawing a person you will start with adding shape to the areas that need shape. Begin with the head and work your way down to the feet. Be sure, once again, to make sure that the shapes are proportional to each other. The body should be a size that makes the head look normal. In addition, the arms and legs should both be the same shape. If you get the shape of the arms and legs wrong then the drawing will not look balanced and symmetrical. Keep in mind, however, the angle that you are drawing the person from could affect the size and shape of the arms and legs. If you get to a point where the basic volumes begin to not look how they should it is simple enough to start over by erasing what you have already done. A good tip is to use a pencil with an eraser so that you can go back and change your work.
You will want to connect the shapes after you have them exactly how you want them. This is done by slowly drawing lines from one shape to the next. An example would be connecting the head of your person the shoulders. You will obviously want to draw the neck in and have it look as if it naturally flows into the body. The connecting lines will round out the overall shape of your drawing. The connecting lines will also bring it to life and make it begin to really resemble what you have set out to draw.
The last thing that you need to do when learning how to draw is to add the details. The details are the little things that help to give the drawing a finished look. For example, on a drawing of a person some of the details may be the eyes, ears and nose. In addition, the details may include things like the buttons on a shirt or the look the person has on their face. Adding the details is the fun part of learning how to draw as it is the part where you can really customize your creation.
