How to Crochet

crochet 150x150 How to CrochetLearning how to crochet is something that can be valuable throughout the lifetime of a person. Crocheting is a skill that will never go away but will always provide value to a person or that person’s family. Some people use this skill as a way to provide for their loved ones. It is possible to make clothing, blankets or other items that are necessary. These items can be made by crocheting for much cheaper than they can be purchased in a store. In addition to making necessary items, many people like to crochet as a hobby. These people choose to crochet as a way to relax both mentally and physically. In short, people that crochet as a hobby make the same items as people that do so out of necessity. The only difference is that the people who crochet clothes, etc. for a hobby do so for fun as opposed to necessity.

The first thing that you need to do before you begin to crochet is making sure you have all the materials that you will need. In order to have a successful crocheting session you want to make sure that you have your yarn and crocheting hooks. These are used in the simplest form of crochet. As you become more advanced you will want to look into different types of yarn as well as different types of hooks and needles that will make the advanced stitches much simpler.

The first step in learning how to crochet is preparing the yarn. You are going to want to pull a length of yarn out that is approximately three feet long. Make a slip knot in the yarn at a point that is about five or six inches from the end. Make sure to leave a good bit of slack in the knot as pulling it tight will interfere with the following steps. Next, you will want to take your crochet hook and insert it into the center of the slip knot. Pull on the yarn until the knot is snug around the crochet hook. The key is to make sure that the knot is not too tight but just snug enough. While holding the hook in your right hand, you want to take the length of yarn that you pulled out and fold it over your left hand while also grabbing the end of the slip knot between your left thumb and your left index finger. Using your left middle finger, wrap the length of yarn around the shaft of the crochet needle from back to front. This should create a loop. In order to create your first stitch, you will want to draw the yarn through the loop. Now, you have made your first stitch which is central to the process of crocheting. Without knowing this basic fundamental there is no way that you could ever move on to more advanced techniques. The basic stitch is what the art of crocheting is built upon.

After you have mastered the basic stitch you can move on to other, more advanced, techniques. You can repeat the steps above to create as many stitches as you need. This is called making the foundation chain. Each pattern that you are trying to crochet will call for a foundation chain. You have to know how many stitches are needed in the chain so that you can correctly crochet your pattern. It should be noted, however, that you do not count the knot or the loop around the hook when considering your foundation chain.

A more advanced, but fundamental, crocheting technique is the single crochet. This will be used in all of your basic and more advanced patterns. In order to perform the single crochet you are going to want to put an additional hook into the front of the second stitch that you made. You should have two stitches on your hook. Next, you are going to carefully wrap the yarn around the hook from the front to the back while pulling the yarn through the first loop on the hook. After that you will wrap the yarn around the hook from front to back again while pulling the yarn through both loops.  The end result will be a single crochet. You can repeat these steps as many times as necessary in order to follow along with the pattern that you have in mind. The process can be repeated with each subsequent stitch that you make.

Learning how to crochet can be a valuable lesson that you carry on with you throughout life. Not only does it help to keep your mind active but it will always challenge you as you get older and more advanced. The key is to not get frustrated and stick with it. Learning how to crochet can take a lot of time to master and perfect.
